Now Hiring: Farmers’ Market Manager

About the position

If you love farms, food, small businesses, and local markets, this might be the perfect part-time job for you! We’re looking to hire an eager applicant with exceptional communication skills, management or event planning experience, and a commitment to the ethos of our neighborhood farmers market!

The BIFM Market Manager is responsible for daily operations of the market during the market season (from April-November). The Market Manager is the organization’s primary staff person and is charged with operating the market and representing the organization to its members and to the public. This position is responsible for a broad array of Market operations and activities including the management of vendor accounts, communication with customers, collaboration with the board of directors, and publishing weekly marketing material. As such, applicants need to have: strong self‐initiative, effective personal time management, and strong communication skills. The position requires the ability to work independently, as well as with a close team of other volunteer staff.

This is a seasonal, part‐time employee position on an annual salary of $26,000 (after tax withholding). During the market season (April-November), the manager must be present at the markets on Saturdays from 7:00am-3:00pm. Most other work is done remotely or in and around downtown Winslow. The typical workload averages: 30 hours per week during the market season (April – November) and 10 hours per month (November ‐ April).

About the Market

Founded in 1990, The Bainbridge Island Farmers Market Association (BIFMA) is a non-profit organization operated by a volunteer Board of Directors made up of vendors and community members. BIFMA’s mission is to create a marketplace to connect local farmers and artisan food and craft vendors with a diverse customer base, foster community well-being through education and food access, and promote a strong local economy. It's a community-supported farmers market that provides a viable economic outlet for farmers and food producers, and where local artisans and crafters can sell their hand-made products.

The Market is held on Saturdays from 10 AM to 2 PM in the Town Square at City Hall of Bainbridge Island. The BIFM Market Manager ensures the Market operates in compliance with the Washington State Farmers Market Association (WSFMA) Roots Guidelines, state law, health codes, and organizational rules. The Market Manager also completes office duties related to planning, record keeping, and correspondence for the market.

Physical and other requirements

  • Ability to safely lift and carry 50 pounds. Ability to walk and stand for long periods of time.

  • Handle exposure to elements. Be able to work outdoors in any weather.

  • Have a valid driver's license, insurance, and access to a reliable vehicle large enough to transport market equipment on market days.

  • Be available for cell phone and email contact with staff and vendors during the work week and to be on-site during the Market Day.

 

Skills and abilities

  • Familiarity with online office programs like QuickBooks Online and Google Docs / Drive, and the ability to learn to use other software

  • Accuracy in performing math and accounting tasks, basic filing

  • Ability to clearly communicate with the board of directors, customers, vendors, and community partners, including writing weekly email newsletters, social posts, and all vendor correspondence

  • Enthusiasm to collaborate in website marketing, social media outreach, and community fundraising

 

Duties

  1. Manage the Market on Saturdays, including preparation and work closing down the Market properly.

  2. Manage member / vendor / community group application processes, which include fielding phone calls, determining eligibility, processing applications and fees, verifying health department and other permits and licenses, and keeping accurate written and digital records of it all.

  3. Maintain Membership contact information.

  4. Attend Annual, Board, and Member meetings which are generally held on weekday evenings or Saturday mornings between November and April. 

  5. Communicate and coordinate with the Board and various committees on a regular basis regarding events, marketing, issues at the market, finances, and anything else pertinent.
